Day 7 - Boulders & Lakes

RAILWAY STATION, DUNEDIN

From Dunedin, we return to Queenstown. A slight detour in the route meant that we will be visiting the three points of interest previously missed.
  • Lake Tekapo
  • Church of the Good Shepherd
  • Lake Pukaki
Before we leave for Queenstown, there was still a bit of Dunedin left to be seen.

UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO
Built by the Scottish community when they settled in Dunedin.

BALDWIN STREET
According to the Guinness Book of Records, Baldwin Street is the steepest Street in the World!

It is a short straight cul-de-sac a little under 350 meters. Baldwin Street rises from 30 m above sea level at it's junction with North Road to 100 m above sea level at the top. Its lower reaches are only moderately steep and surfaced with asphalt but the upper reaches are far steeper and surfaced with concrete for safety on Dunedin frosty mornings.

MOERAKI BOULDERS
Unusually large and spherical boulders lay along a stretch of the beach on the wave-cut Otago coast.

One cannot help wondering if some ancient asteroid had hit this beach and left the boulders behind.

According to Mr Beady-Eyes, these were once dinosaur eggs.

Black round stone with veins.

Shoe Brush (Sand)
LAKE PUKAKI

Mr Beady-Eyes told us that the lake town of Dale (Desolation of Smaug - The Hobbits) were shot somewhere on this lake.

This is a good place to see Mount Cook.

LAKE TEKAPO
A favorite haunt for star-gazers.

THE CHURCH OF THE GOOD SHEPHERD

The waitress brought us our beef.
